The kind of stuff I have been writing recently would not be published on any Geocities or Fortune City website! We  have been playing with Sirius talkers  - James has been using Crystal Palace and I have been using Selene.  It is a chance to really let my hair down online.  I came across it by reading some academic research about multi-user domains.

On MUDs I write stories, called 'scenes', which we make up as we go along.  The people I write them with can be anywhere in the world with internet access.  The experience is intense if you enter into the spirit of it.

Sex in real life is fraught with all kinds of consequences depending on your gender: you might get pregnant, you might catch a VD or AIDS or your partner might find out and savage you with a Kitchen Devil (TM).  Part of the allure of cybersex is that it is safe.  Even theBDSM is safe and (relatively) painless."

"After all ninety percent of sex in real life 'takes place in the mind' as Sherry Turkle put it.  As she so delightfully suggested, much of the text is typed in one-handed.  Cybersex is condemned as immoral, disgusting or sad depending on the prejudices of the condemner (if there is such a word).  Their attitudes come from technophobia.   I expect illiterate people think of love letters as a perversion!

The people who use these multi-user domains are worryingly normal.  The only way they differ from most people is that they are very friendly and tolerant.  And these are BDSM fans!

Don't take my word for it.  Go along to talker.com (208.220.34.34) port 9930 for Selene or port 9900 for Crystal Palace.  You can download a free client like ZMUD and apart from your phone bill it is free to use the service.  Yes these BDSM types do this out of the kindness of their hearts.

(BDSM - almost the first thing you encounter on Selene is a discussion on what this means. Bondage, Domination, Sado-Masochism is the general area.

You know the kind of thing: a Masochist says *more pain more pain* and a Sadist says, "No."
